I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Esther Derby. She has co-authored and authored several books, including:
Behind Closed Doors: Secrets of Great Management
Agile Retrospectives (1st & second edition)
7 Rules For Positive Productive Change: Micro Shifts, Macro Results.
Esther has been in the software industry for more than 40 years, observing, leading, and learning from change and has influenced a generation of leaders in the industry.
We spoke about her how she got where she is today, seeing in systems, what happens to us when we take new jobs, and how she helps tech leaders out who are 'a little bit stuck.'
I love speaking with Esther because her approach to coaching considers both the whole person and the system they're in. She isn't just technical- or people-focused, but also includes systems of thought (the way her clients think), and awareness of how they're impacted (and how they impact) by the bigger picture.
I was particularly captivated by how she talks about 'taking on some of the assumptions of a system when we enter [it]."
