There are 3 ways to resolve conflict:
1. Win-win. When everybody walks away happy, nobody feels exploited, and we’re more likely to work together again. Win-win builds relationships.
2. Win-lose. While it works in sports, win-lose is a poor model for conflict resolution. The loser is almost always unhappy, with the result being damaged relationships and lower likelihood of future collaboration.
3. Compromise. While everybody walks away from a compromise feeling that at least it wasn’t worse, their unlikely to enthusiastically work on future conflicts together. Sometimes, compromise is the only viable path. If that’s the case, take it. But it’s usually possible to do better.
Always look for the win-win.
